Call our Specialty Care Department before your child sees a specialist we’ve recommended — whether or not your insurance requires authorization.
Specialty Care Department: (781) 933-0254
What to tell us
Once the specialist appointment is booked, call and leave the following on the voicemail, or send the same details through MyChart:
- Your child’s name and date of birth
- The specialist’s name
- Appointment date, and the reason for it
- Insurance plan and ID number, if the plan is new
- The best daytime number to reach you
Why it matters even when authorization isn’t required
Calling lets us send your child’s clinical history to the specialist ahead of the appointment. That means the specialist arrives informed rather than starting from scratch, and any authorization your plan does require gets processed at the same time.
Your child’s primary care provider knows their history and is best placed to guide specialty care. An athletic trainer can recommend physical therapy, for instance, but the referral still has to come through the PCP.
Urgent care and walk-in visits
Some urgent care and walk-in visits need insurance authorization. Use them only when our office is closed, or when our staff have directed you there.
Afterwards, call the Specialty Care Department with the details above so we can document your child’s chart and help you work out whether authorization is needed for coverage.
